At about the time of the events chronicled in "The Early and Wet Reception" (early summer of 2004), Julie Chen, the lovely Asian anchor of "The Early Show" was on an overseas assignment. Her task was to cover how the producers of the popular series "Survivor" picked a location for the show and set it up. At the time, an island in the small South Pacific archipelago known as Pulau-Pulau (not to be confused with Palau) was a front-runner. Pulau-Pulau was reasonably good location, but it lacked a large airport. As a result, Julie had to fly in to an airport in Tahiti and hop a small plane to an airstrip just outside Pulau-Pulau's main town. On top of this inconvenience, Julie's luggage was held up and would be arriving later on the island.
The plane landed without incident and Julie exited with her carry-on bag. A short ride into town took her to the local hotel, a plain but clean establishment, where Julie checked in and put her bag in her room.
While sitting in the lobby waiting for her luggage to arrive, Julie was greeted by a tall man who was obviously not a local.
"You must be Julie Chen. Hi, I'm Jesse." the man said as he introduced himself.
"Yes, I am." Julie responded.
"Well," Jesse explained, "I'm the man your bosses hired to take you to the island that they're planning to do that show on. Just follow me."
"Wait a minute!" exclaimed Julie. "My luggage hasn't gotten here yet! It has the jeans, shirt, and sneakers I'm planning on wearing for that trip. I can't go dressed like this!" Julie was wearing a white blouse (her jacket was hanging in the hotel room - the weather was too warm for it), a tan skirt that came about two inches above the knee, and tan pumps.
"Don't worry. You'll do fine." Jesse answered. "All you will be doing is walking around to a few places. It's not like you'll be doing any rock climbing or going through swamps. Besides, today is the only day the camera crew is able to do the shoot."
"Huh?" Julie asked.
"Yeah." Jesse explained. "To save money, the footage will be shot by a local crew."
Julie said "Oh, all right. Let's go. This can't get much worse than it is already."
